U.S. seeks to strengthen ties between the two nations.
U.S. Army Chief of Staff General James McConville traveled to Jakarta last week, where he met with Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto to discuss ways to strengthen military collaboration between the U.S. and Indonesia. Heightened defense and security in the Indo-Pacific region has become a global priority in recent years, growing in focus as China continues to threaten territorial expansion.
“We have many friends in the region, and we work closely together. We all share the same interests for the region: peace, security, stability,” General McConville said. “That’s why we work together on maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific for everyone.”
Though Indonesia has opted for a neutral stance concerning the tensions between China and Western powers, Minister Subianto agreed that maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region “is our common concern.”
